Kyungsung University (President Jong-geun Lee) Department of Fashion Design held the exhibition 'Immigrants of Two Cities' at Kyungsung University's First Art Museum from Monday the 20th to Sunday the 26th .

The exhibition was hosted and organized by the Department of Global Culture at Kyungsung University, sponsored by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Cultural Heritage Foundation of Korea, and in collaboration with California State University-San Bernardino and the Department of Fashion Design at Kyungsung University.

The theme of this exhibition is the national intangible cultural asset, the 'Haenyeo', and it is an exhibition that conveys their migratory life through audiovisual information. Five 4th-year students (Kim Hye-rim, Kim Yun-ho, Kim Kyung-eun, Kim Do-eun, Shin Yun-ji) of the Fashion Design Department taking the Kyungsung University Link 3.0 Project Group Industry-Academic Channel course and Professor Chae Hee-ju exhibited actual haenyeo suits under the title 'Breathing Tradition: Haenyeo, Embarking on a Digital Age' and, through a 3D fashion simulation program, implemented haenyeo suits from the past to the present, and even the future, as 3D virtual samples to convey the history of haenyeo suits to visitors. The haenyeo suits of the past, present, and future, completed as a 3D simulation, are the work of the five students who analyzed and predicted various materials. They created the haenyeo suit pattern using 2D Uttu CAD from CA PLANET Co., Ltd. and implemented it in 3D using the Z-WEAVE program from Z-EMOTION Co., Ltd.

The 'Immigrants of Two Cities' exhibition displays actual haenyeo suits from the past and present, and for this exhibition, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Haenyeo Museum provided various related materials. In addition, Sora Diving Suits, located in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, is one of the companies that makes rubber suits for the approximately 600 haenyeo using traditional methods, and they sponsored the traditional black rubber suits that haenyeo wore when diving, as well as the colored haenyeo suits (diving suits with orange on the upper torso to prevent the risk of accidents in the event of diving accidents or collisions with ships) that Jeju haenyeo currently wear.

The exhibition hall has an experiential space where visitors can try on haenyeo suits. In addition, a collaborative work event was prepared where pieces of discarded haenyeo suit fabric were attached to a wooden floor installed in the center of the exhibition hall to complete ‘Haenyeo, Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 132, focusing on marine materials’, which received a great response from visitors.

The five students who were in charge of the 3D representation of the haenyeo clothing in this joint exhibition said, “It was a meaningful time to learn deeply about the history of haenyeo and haenyeo suits during the exhibition preparation process . In particular, thanks to the ‘Sora diving suit,’ we were able to observe the material and silhouette of the haenyeo suit, which made it easy to implement it as a 3D virtual sample. I was interested in special suits like haenyeo suits, and I think I gained knowledge about rubber special suits through this exhibition. I would like to thank Professor Kim Joo-hyun of the Department of Global Culture Studies and Professor Chae Hee-joo of the Department of Fashion Design for giving me this opportunity.”

Professor Chae Hee-joo of the Fashion Design Department, who was in charge of planning the exhibition on haenyeo clothing, said, “Expressing special clothing through 2D CAD and 3D simulation programs can reduce time and cost by identifying and correcting errors in the structure and design of the clothing in advance, and can enhance visual expression. In addition, it is very advantageous in that it can increase the efficiency of special clothing production because it can check the texture of the same texture as the real thing in advance with various digital fabrics, and I expect it to be very effective as a variety of promotional strategies. I would like to once again express my gratitude to Curator Kwon Mi-seon of the Jeju Haenyeo Museum and CEO Ko Tae-hyeop of Sora Diving Suit for their sincere advice and cooperation on the history, pattern structure, and design of haenyeo clothing for the 3D work .”

Meanwhile, Kyung Sung University's Fashion Design Department is conducting a Jisanhak project with professors and students through various curricular and extracurricular programs. In addition, the 3D Fashion Simulation Project, an industry-academia-research project within the Industry-Academic Channel-Capstone curriculum, is planning and operating various programs with support from Kyung Sung University's LINC 3.0 Business Group.
